Hong Kong has long faced challenges in waste management. While high proportions of wastepaper and metal are recycled, only a small portion of waste plastics are recycled.

A growing number of local companies are developing capacity for collecting and processing plastics into re-usable materials. Most notable are innovative processors such as New Life Plastics for PET bottles and Mil Mill for beverage cartons.

New Life Plastics, located in the Eco Park in Tuen Mun uses advanced technology to process used plastic beverage bottles into food-grade plastic flakes which can be used to make new bottles. Mil Mill is a specialised pulp mill and education centre dedicated to recycling liquid cartons, popular for tea, juice and milk drinks.
